Cloudian_LogoIn this episode I’m with Amir Chaudry (Head of global system engineering at Cloudian) and we talk about:

– Cloudian Hyperstore tiering functionality
– New integration with Hadoop
– How Cloudian leverages this integration to improve support

Here the Full transcript of the show

Enrico: Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of Juku.beats. Today, I’m here with Cloudian, and Amir Chaudry, which is the head global system engineer. Hi, Amir.

Amir Chaudry: Hi Enrico, how are you doing?

Enrico: Very well, and you?

Amir Chaudry: I’m doing great. Thank you for having me on today.

Enrico: I have also a little disclaimer, and it is that I worked with Cloudian last year. But I really liked the technology and object storage in general. First of all, one of the features that I like the most about Cloudian, for sure, is the ability to tier data to the cloud. Can you tell to our listeners how it works.

Amir Chaudry: Sure. Cloudian is the first, and to the best of my knowledge, the only vendor in the market today that provides the unique ability of creating a single-name space over a public and private cloud, providing a seamless experience to our customer. Unlike most cloud-made solutions available today, Enrico, which mainly act as temporary caching devices, our solution is a true, on premise, private cloud with the ability to tier out to a public cloud, if desired by a customer. In it’s simplest form, if I were to explain it to a customer. How it works is that we enable customers to define data policies, based on the [aerial-axis 00:01:29] pattern of objects within the buckets. These policies are then set. On a [bare-bucket 00:01:35] level, we can set it to tier off to any SV, AVI compliant public cloud, like Amazon SV, or Glacier, for example. Or any private SV, AVI compliant cloud, like another clouding cluster, for example.

Data is encrypted and compressed before it is sent off to the target cloud, ensuring that your data is always secure at rest. It provides you best utilization for your network resources. When a customer wants to read any data which has been tiered off to a destination cloud, hyper source software intelligently provides the most efficient way of delivering the data back to a customer, by either streaming, redirecting, or restoring an object back into the primary cluster. I truly believe that this is a game-changing technology for a lot of our customers, and really contrasted into big business [managers 00:02:29] for our customers.

Enrico: Interesting. But actually, as far as I know, this is one of the many features. In fact, in the latest release, you also this new integration with HDFS, and the loop. Can you please tell me more about that?

Amir Chaudry: Absolutely. A great question. HyperStore features full Apache Hadoop integration. As I mentioned earlier, enterprises can now transfer from big data into smart data by running Hadoop analytics and the HyperStore software and appliances. This in-place data analytics with no need to offer data to other systems for Hadoop analysis will enable our customers to derive meaningful business intelligence from their data quickly, efficiently, and economically. Also, if you were to look under the hood, we are leveraging S3FS as the target for HDFS, that allows enterprises to utilize a Cloudian device as an HDFS starboard storage.

Customers can then run [map-reduced 00:03:37] jobs on top of smart data stored on Cloudian. I would say that analytics is really becoming the foundation of smart data. To store data on a smart system, like ours, and then be able to run Hadoop on top of it, offers huge business advantages to enterprises in terms of scalability, efficiency, cost savings, and time for results. From the [present 00:04:00] industry to medical research, I would say that we are seeing no shortage of marketers that would benefit from turning big data into smart data. It’s really about how good business decisions you can make by utilizing and turning on the smart data capability of HyperStore.

Enrico: I know that you are the first customer of your technology. I remember that you have an unsaid superb services based on analytics. Can you help me to understand better how you utilized the system?

Amir Chaudry: Sure. In the last release of our Cloudian HyperStore, we introduced something called, “Smart Support.” What Smart Support will enable our customers to do is to enable call-home feature loggging to a back-end cluster that we are right now running on Cloudian HyperStore. That cluster is collecting all the log data from our numerous customers around the world that opt to turn on that Smart Support functionality. We actually developed a partnership with Hortonworks, that Hortonworks now can look at that data [fully 00:05:13], and be able to turn it on.

We are going to run analytics on all the log data that we are collecting. We’ll be able to run predictive analysis for our customers. We’ll be able to give them the ability to run flash boards, so the customer can actually view what kind of data do they have, what kind of decisions do they need to make. One of the biggest things, when you are dealing with data at capacity, is how do you do performance and capacity planning? One of the things that our customers will benefit from by using smart data stored on HyperStore; Front-ended, and running. Delegate map-produced jobs from a Hortonworks base. Distribution, we’ll be able to provide that functionality to all of our end users.

Enrico: Wow, sounds awesome. Just the last question about Cloudian. Where we can find you, your website, or a tutor account of Cloudian?

Amir Chaudry: You can find us at www.Cloudian.com, it’s cloud with an I-A-N in the end. Www.Cloudian.com. That it is the website. Go check us out today, thank you so much for having me on the call today.

Enrico: Thank you very much. Bye bye.
